Double A-Sides, everyone’s doing them these days. It’s all very well giving the radio/music channels a choice in which song they play, but what about those of us who like really good B-Sides? Nevermind eh, so what’s Voos Double-A like then? Well, first up is ‘Same Mistakes’, which is the faster one of the two. It only follows that ‘What Will Happen When?’ is the slightly slower one, which builds up gradually to a rather nice crescendo.
Style wise it’s probably most accurate to say that Voo’s thing is fuzzy college rock, it’s kind of like Death Cab For Cutie, who the band are admittedly a fan of, mixed with a little bit of Young Knives added in. The rhythm section of Voo warrants particular mention for being rather good and lifting the band above average.
Of the two songs on offer here, we have to say that we prefer ‘Same Mistakes’ which pounds its way along before racing rather brilliantly to the finish, that the song speeds along also helps the vocals, which over the slower section seem a little week. This is more evident on ‘What Will Happen When?’, but by no means makes it a bad song.
Voo won’t change your life by any means but this is a nice fuzzy little gem from well under the radar.
