Easter Egg Hunt

Are Brand New finally sending out the lyric books for ‘The Devil and God…’

The Long Island band are up to something, again

Are Brand New finally sending out the lyric books for ‘The Devil and God…’?

Nine years ago Brand New released their rather good third album ‘The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.’ The lyric book for the album doesn’t have any lyrics in it though, instead it contains a series of pictures, phrases and the instruction that if you sent $1 to the address enclosed, you’d receive an actual lyric book. People complied but nothing materialised. Until yesterday, that is.

Pictures starting appearing of people claiming to have finally received their lyric books, packaged with a slew of cryptic stuff and their $1 back.

Now, this being Brand New, the seemingly random phrases/numbers/images probably fit into part of a much wider puzzle. Late last year they updated their website to display the phrase “Procrastinate! Pogolith Earth Sound Alliance 2015” which fuelled all sorts of speculation. Then the website changed to include a hidden link to this website from 2001. Again, fuelling speculation without answering anything.

This next step in the puzzle comes two weeks before Brand New re-release Deja Entendu on vinyl for Record Store Day and a few days before they head out on tour.

The lyric book contains several images that Absolute Punk are speculating upon.

The numbers in the middle of the top image seem to translate, with A=1, B=2 ect, to ‘Brand New’ while the image itself is an altered picture from ‘The Battle of Los Angeles’ but what could Brand New RIP 2018 mean?

The phrase “Know Gods Just Work” appeared on a billboard towards the end of last year and, in an interview with someone connected to RAMBO, the graffiti artist in question, it was explained as meaning,” Well, KNOW is spelled K-N-O-W. The NO is circled. So, there again you have a play with words and spelling. I seriously doubt that God looks like the trendy image that is hanging in every church. But I know that every true person who is of their craft, it becomes their religion. It’s something that they’re trying to keep steadfast, and something that they are living and breathing. There’s no part-timing this situation. Because you can’t get away from it. It’s always watching you.”

And then there’s this advert for a cassette version of the leaked 2006 Brand New demos that includes, among other things, the address of New York’s Wardenclyffe Tower.

Essentially, we have no idea what’s going on. It could have something to do with electricity, a new Brand New album, a new side project or something else entirely but we do know Brand New are up to something.
