Flying Lotus interviews Kendrick Lamar, shares collaboration ‘Eyes Above’
Steve Ellison invited Kendrick Lamar to his BBC Radio 1 Residency. Brainfeeder’s Lapalux also played a guest mix on the show.
Last night on his BBC Radio 1 Residency, Flying Lotus invited Kendrick Lamar into the studio for an interview. The two have previously worked together a number of times; Kendrick appeared on FlyLo’s latest album ‘You’re Dead!’ on ‘Never Catch Me’ and Steven Ellison also produced ‘Wesley’s Theory’ from Kendrick’s recent release ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’.
At the end of the show, Flying Lotus shared his previously unreleased collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, ‘Eyes Above’. The show also featured a guest mix from Lapalux, who is signed to Ellison’s Brainfeeder label.
Ellison called ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ a “a future classic” during the interview. Meanwhile, Lamar expanded on the record, saying that it’s “me collecting every bit of music I’ve learned to live with and love since the day I was born. My father’s influences from oldies to gangster rap. That was it for me and not being in fear to show these influences.”
He also spoke about the importance of putting passion first. “I encourage you, the listener, to always put your heart over a number or a dollar sign, because your heart is going to lead you to the right places,” he said. “I could have gone into any direction with this record. My heart told me to go with this direction. When the opportunity presents itself it’ll put you in a place you never imagine.”
