Groves get graceful for new ‘Backless’ single

It’s the perfect meeting of minds. Groves - a London five-piece adding bright invention to pop - and Richard Formby, a producer with a lifetime’s experience working with this kind of material. Anyone with Wild Beasts’ ‘Smother’ LP on the previous credits would jump at the chance to produce a band like this, and the partnership introduces itself on new single ‘Backless’.

For anyone new to Groves, they backed up the groove-led ‘Paperback’ with a more stately ‘Send High’ track earlier this year. ‘Backless’ exists in altogether different territory, though. A night sky dreamer, it counts the stars and thinks big with every move. Musically it’s in a similar world to Outfit’s grandiose yet minimal pop, but there’s a different spirit to Groves that makes them a unique proposition.
