Features The Neu Bulletin (4th April 2014)
Neu’s weekend new music guide features Cashmere Cat, Sunni Colòn and TĀLĀ.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG
Cashmere Cat - London, The Laundry
Norwegian producer Cashmere Cat makes a rare London visit tonight in the incredible open area of The Laundry, which is essentially one giant concrete jungle masquerading as a music venue. The perfect space for a Friday night gig.
THE BIG NEU THING
Sunni Colòn
There are several sides to Thierry Tetsu aka Sunni Colon. His music morphs from tense and terrified to a sunny-side-up, Frank Ocean-channelling sun lounger in the space of a few minutes. Everything’s self-produced, and so far he’s treating every song like it’s a different beast or a separate chapter in his life. New song ‘Eternal Flowers’ skews tribal, percussive samples and overlays anger-laced verses. ‘Voyage/ Lightyears’ meanwhile could be lifted straight out of the afterlife of Frank O’s ‘Sierra Leone’. Slicked back and blissed up to the skies, put those two tracks back to back and you’ve got someone with incredible range.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
TĀLĀ - The Duchess
London producer TALA’s first cut of heady, throbbing bass music is of a different ilk to everyday late-night electronica. That’s partly due to her Iranian descent, partly because she seems to be making a habit of using primary elements - space, darkness, moody atmospherics - for more unusual causes. As it progresses, ‘The Duchess’ morphs into a monster. A beautiful one at that.
