Boston duo MVSCLES made an unexpected return last month with their ‘Somethin” track, a due reminder of their snappy, happy-to-lucky synth pop.

Before ‘Somethin”, there was a relative dearth of material. The pair emerged in 2012 with ‘Sweet ‘n Sour’. Shortly after that they pretty much went AWOL. It’s a regular trend for a fair few blog-based breakthroughs, but it turns out MVSCLES’ story has more of a purpose than just a case of falling into obscurity.

‘We have lots to share,’ the band insist, in a DIY interview (below) that reveals why they’d been out of the spotlight. Labels meddled and MVSCLES were having none of it. Watch their new, intimate family portrait of a video for ‘Somethin” above the interview.

You released some really impressive debut tracks and then went quiet for a good year. Can you explain what happened in those twelve months?
Thanks! Most of the year was spent working while waiting. We handed in multiple versions of an album and didn’t hear a word back for months. When they finally got back to us, they wanted to change our name, our songwriting, our productions, everything that made us MVSCLES. We felt powerless. The only power we had was to say ‘no’. It came to a point where we spent months begging to be dropped from the label. After over a year being stuck, they finally let us out of the contract. Looking back on it now, it was an invaluable experience that we needed to have.

How’s your work developed since say, ‘Sweet n Sour’ and your latest recordings?
We treat every song uniquely. It’s a very spontaneous process. As far as how our work has developed, we feel it’s for the listener to decide. We have lots more to share.

What’s coming up after ‘Somethin”? Are you self-releasing a full-length?
We’re writing and we want to release a full-length by the end of 2014.
