Girl Band have existed for a good couple of years, their World Cup-referencing ‘France 98’ EP making big impressions back in 2012. But it wasn’t until a mention on Jon Hillcock’s All Back No Front podcast this week that we got wind of these guys. We say mention. It was a seven-minute slot of their new track. ‘Why they hide their bodies under my garage’ is a Blawan cover and it is positively sinister. Its opening minute is sole, heady percussion. In comes the wave of industrial guitars, as if these guys just peered into a HEALTH practice session. And then it builds and builds, until you’re a sorry mess. A puddle of both despair and cheap thrill.
The four piece of Dara Kiely, Alan Duggan, Daniel Fox and Adam Faulkner don’t always sound this way. The songs forming ‘France 98’ are more direct and abrupt beings. Sure, again they’ve the aim of altering the state of your eardrums for the short-term benefits, the long-term destruction. But in their hypnotic, harsh build, each song is relentlessly bold, destined to be flung from rooftops like television screens that shatter onto the pathetic concrete. This is maniacal music, the kind that translates onto its listener and turns them into a more rabid individual. Watch out.
