Being a solo artist must be the hardest thing in music. Imagine getting up on stage on your own and being solely responsible for the entertainment of a crowd. No band to cover your mistakes or provide support as you perform. No one else to share the distress should you happen upon a bad review. It’s all this and more for Alanna McArdle under the Ides moniker.

What takes things a step further for her is the nakedness of the lyrical situations within these songs. Whether lamenting regrets, disdain or loneliness; there’s a space within for the listener to take refuge and find comfort. It’s incredibly brave subject matter for any artist to tackle, but it’s subject matter so rewarding when done well. And with the perfect match of melancholy and space within the sound, Ides is certainly doing this well.
