London based Andy Smith goes under the name Luxury (recently shifted to Lxury). It’s a pretty apt moniker when you listen to the bedroom producer’s recent track ‘J.A.W.S.’, which comes practically gleaming in riches.
Produced by Disclosure, it marks a departure for Luxury in a relatively short career. Previous songs ‘Faith’ and ‘Never Love’ offered something familiar to fans of Four Tet and Teebs - clever production, 4/4 rhythms and weighty vocals. ‘Faith’ had a particularly distinct exotic influence, built with bricks that possessed a euphoric pomp and emotional charge. Sadly, these tracks are unavailable now; typical of an artist who remains tight-lipped with his cards very much close to his chest.
‘J.A.W.S.’ is especially exciting for two reasons: The Lawrence brothers’ influence can clearly be heard, with garage-leaning rhythms and snappy percussion shuffling the track’s fabric to buoyant spheres. Its pounding, ultra-assertive nature now finds Luxury in a realm of discerning and astute dance music, which his previous material would not have suggested otherwise. It’s as big as a breakthrough track gets, all with a little help from his friends.
