Burial’s first two records are masterpieces that have been cited as such in conversation and on music forums for many years now. But both ‘Untrue’ and its eponymous predecessor have taken time to show off their legacy. Various producers were inevitably going to take influence or even pay homage to the anonymous producer’s triumphs, but only now are they starting to show their faces.
Play ‘Morgan’ by Chicago’s Mister Lies and you get a strong impression of everything that shines through in Burial’s music: Light dubstep percussion, warm, muted synths and perfectly-timed, soulful vocal samples. Mr. Lies adds the odd sweet guitar line to his songs, hinting at a progression from circa-2006 electronic music. More, in a collaborative effort with vocalist Jessica Blanchet, he appears to add a jazz patch to his musical quilt. It’s early days for the upcoming individual, but you expect him to loosen himself of the Burial influence before taking off for bigger things.
