With one full-length album, two EP’s and five singles under their belts Temple Songs are nothing if not prolific. The band started life two years ago when front man Jolan recorded an EP and upped sticks to Paris to work on the songs that would become their first full-length effort ‘15 Bygones’. On his return to Manchester he convinced some childhood friends that forming a band would be a laugh. Their lo-fi slacker-rock sound – although current- doesn’t feel like its been forced onto them by some over enthusiastic A&R type and their production values are lo-fi through necessity not design.
Which isn’t to say they sound sloppy. This isn’t the fuzzy sound of a band that have just discovered the distortion switch. It’s the sound of a band that writes music for their friends and would be more comfortable headlining a student-flat than a festival stage. Paradoxically it’s this approach that might just drag them out into the sunlight this year. The thrashing joy of songs like ‘Dragging You Down’ and ‘$$$$$$’ $$ $ $$$$$$$$’ is reminiscent of the much hyped Palma Violets, and their psychedelic leanings are the kind that have earned Kettering boys Temples so much hype. Brash, joyous and accidentally of the moment Temple Songs look set for a big year.
