THE GIG
Temple Songs support Splashh & Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs - Leeds, Brudenell Social Club
Bit-by-bit, Temple Songs are gradually cementing themselves as one of the brightest guitar-wielding forces in the country. Give or take a year and they could be headlining a bill like this. Witness them in fine early form while you still can.
THE SONG
Hippo Campus - Little Grace
Tarzan Reject EP by Hippo Campus
Minneapolis’ Hippo Campus are so convinced of their Vampire Weekend-style credentials, they changed their name from The Halocline to this current moniker. Ok, so Ezra Koenig and co aren’t usually associated with hippos, but they’ve one foot on campus the whole time they waltz through intelligent alt-pop. The same applies for this four piece. Citing Wu Lyf as an influence, their slant on shape-shifting rock is a little more cheery than the Manchester cult heroes. ‘Little Grace’, the opener on a debut ‘Tarzan Reject’ EP, ends in the kind of beaming-smiled chanted coda that’d be associated with movie montages. Somehow it dodges every cliche under the sun, ending up as wild as a pack of hyenas chasing that coveted hippo.
