THE WEEKEND GIG
Khushi, Oliver Wilde - London, The Old Blue Last (Saturday 11th)

If Neu’s four Hello 2014 new band nights weren’t enough to get you excited about 2014, DIY’s heading over to the Old Blue Last once more for another free show: Bon Iver-compared newcomer Khushi links up with Bristol darling Oliver Wilde - doors are open from 7.30pm but get there fast; these Saturday nights at OBL tend to fill up pretty quick.

THE BIG NEU THING
Ed Thomas - On My Own

Before he started churning out sleek disco pop triumphs such as ‘On My Own’, Ed Thomas spent a good chunk of time behind the scenes. Writing alongside super producers Bondax, he helped craft some of the most immediate, dance-centric 2013 tracks to circuit UK clubs. His solo guise is similarly capable of soundtracking sweaty Saturday nights drenched in the sour, tragic smell of vodka. ‘On My Own’ is a little more romantic than that image. It’s about the world being at Ed’s feet - which it is, let’s face it - and the fear of living in isolation. Loneliness is the only thing getting in this guy’s way of being a star.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Poledo - King Of Cool

If a new Cribs album doesn’t surface this year, you’re probably just going to have to settle for Poledo. Their rough-necked, reckless take on rock ’n roll is born and bred in shout Jarman land, and all for the better. It understands just how uncool it is, does ‘King of Cool’, and it shuns trends and in vogue chatter by giving up on pretence. As a result, it’s the cleanest expression going, the most downright honest take on garage punk in an age. It’s taken from a split release between Art Is Hard Records and Reeks of Effort.
