THE GIG
Charli XCX - Manchester, Deaf Institute
‘True Romance’ had its release this week, and in amidst all the Jai Paul furore it’s just about stood out as one of the most exciting debuts of the year to date. Those in Manchester will see bubblegum Tumblr pop get another foot in the door; it’s a self-coined genre that’s becoming all the more addictive.
THE WEEKEND GIG
Figures, Tourist, Antwerp - Birthdays, London
Will Phillips is the current Neu favourite in this week’s edition of DIY Weekly, and he spoke about how just about anybody can grab a computer and make music, but few have the good ear required to take a step up. All three on tonight’s bill are part of that cut above, and all three grace Dalston’s Birthdays until the early hours of Sunday morning.
THE SONG
Life & Limb - Fool’s Nest
Signed up to the same label as recent Neu favourites Echopark, Life & Limb are a crossborder project of like-minded musicians who duck and dive through genre conventions and end up with something refined and fresh-faced. Andrea Mangia and Mike McGuire make a good pair: steering what some might render a staple electronic sound into more enlivened territory. Bold synth-pop often overbears and leaves you exhausted, clawing for something with a little less force. But ‘Fool’s Nest’ jumps the hurdles and uncovers Life & Limb as more than just an exciting new name.
