THE GIG
Thumpers support Kwes - Sebright Arms, London

Thumpers are a London band on a mission. We gave them some initial support a few months back and thereafter they holed themselves up in bedrooms, perfecting their live show until it was completely ready for occasions such as these. They support Warp signing Kwes and who knows, maybe the two will collaborate on sophisticated pop efforts in the future? It’s a pipe dream, but one we’ll get a sneaky glimpse of tonight.

THE SONG
Leapling - Seventeen

Alright, so complexity and inventiveness should be celebrated, but in between heavy doses of FlyLo, Battles and Fuck Buttons, there’s always room for a dressed-down, no strings attached pop song. Leapling combine the simplest of song structures and the most obvious of mantras - “L-O-V-E, don’t know what it means to me” - to devastating effect. Most bands wouldn’t pull such an obvious track off, but this Brooklyn band make quite the introductory statement.

‘Seventeen’ is available now through Father Daughter Records.

Strange, fleeting glimpses of Bon Iver’s latest record even appear on occasion on his debut ‘SINAS’ EP, as sentimental, heart-wrenching love songs embark on new territory, rarely faltering in an attempt to cross all kinds of ridiculous boundaries. Rarely will you hear something as ambitious - and successful, we should add - as this, when it comes to a debut effort.
