THE GIG
Hello 2014 - London, The Old Blue Last

Bristol shape-shifters a Empty Pools released a stunning albeit low-key debut with ‘Saturn Reruns’ in 2013. They’re joined by Brighton boys Two Jackals (a go-between for The xx and Iyes), Alt-J channellers Febueder and Birmingham’s Ekkah, a brute force punk prospect ready to take liftoff.

THE BIG NEU THING
Life Model - East Coast

Loosely linked to Fear of Men and Blessa in reviving a honey-glazed branch of ‘80s pop, Glasgow five-piece Life Model force beautiful noise out of displaced elements, like hissing feedback and looping percussion. A little like the plot of The Breakfast Club, opposites end up attracting and becoming best buds on ‘East Coast’. Instead of colliding, these extremes decide to link up for the greater good.

‘East Coast’ is taken from Life Model’s new cassette, out today digitally on Viscerality.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Favela - Throne

21 year old Leeds producer Favela’s clearly looking forward to the world cup if his name’s anything to go by, but his music as a whole - neatly aligned for new EP ‘Easy Yoke’ - is escapism unbounded, a loose application of letting go that can apply to just about anybody. Sweet, clipped samples link up to the EP’s title track, which DIY premiered late last year. Its predecessor’s picked up over 150k plays, if ever there was evidence required for Favela’s gigantic appeal.
