New music guide The Neu Bulletin (24th October 2014)
DIY’s weekend batch of new music tips, featuring Kaytranada, Fictonian and Brazilian Money.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Kaytranada - London, Village Underground
While the DIY Presents Tour 2014 continues in Bournemouth for a free gig featuring Flyte and Shy Nature, London welcomes in Montreal producer Kaytranada. Newly signed to XL Recordings, he applies a headrush mentality to heady electronics, skizzing loops sharing space with distant vocals. Tonight marks the producer’s biggest headline show to date.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Fictonian - Double Negative
The plucked acoustics and stop-frame motions of Fictonian’s latest track are warm, cuddly and comforting. But ‘Double Negative’ packs a dark heart. “I owe nothing to no-one,” runs the mantra, wrestling with emotions. Simple to the extreme, Fictonian’s craft seems easy to replicate on the outside, but try penning songs as direct and hard-hitting as this in a flash - it requires an emotional depth, a backstory to build from.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Brazilian Money - S/T
Dropping earlier this week, Brazilian Money’s debut LP deserves a little time to sink in. The Montreal outfit have a habit of hitting hard with disjointed, obtuse guitar parts not far removed from the late Women (now merging into Viet Cong). A collection of songs initially recorded over the past four years, there’s an intentionally scattered mentality defining this latest release, out now on Psychic Handshake Recordings. File this alongside the new Homeshake LP in being a late-bloom charge on 2014’s crown.
