New music guide The Neu Bulletin (30th April 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Fake Laugh, Jimi Charles Moody and Night Shades.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Fake Laugh, Breathe Panel
A freebie in Camden, tonight The Stillery hosts a showcase of all things bedroom-based and melody-crammed. Kamran Khan’s Fake Laugh tops the bill, with the blistering anthemia of Brighton band Breathe Panel also featuring. Beloved label Beech Coma is on hand for a DJ set, too. Pretend it’s a weekend and stay up all night, why don’t you.
London, The Stillery
Taking a leaf out of Tobias Jesso Jr.’s ‘70s-steeped approach, direct songwriting has another bright new voice with London’s Jimi Charles Moody. His soulful twist on a classic sound is ready to break hearts, ‘Blue Honey’ being an effortless showcase of an exciting new talent. Who wants to guess when this’ll be on an episode of Jools Holland?
THE BIG NEU THING:Jimi Charles Moody — Blue Honey
Tarantino wouldn’t mind having Night Shades on a soundtrack. Their early demos sport the same desert-crawling getaway scenes the director might favour for a future flick. On ‘Pink 13’ especially, there’s a dusky aesthetic defining every bolt of lo-fi, don’t-give-a-fuck garage punk.
