THE GIG
Happyness, Popstrangers, Half Loon - London, Shacklewell Arms

London bands combine in a fully-charged fuzzed-up tag team at the Shacklewell Arms tonight. Happyness just released a debut EP that recalls endless drives on deserted coastline, and that’s pretty much where Popstrangers departed (they used to reside in New Zealand) in order to end up in London. Half Loon complete the bill with their terrifying take on heady rock’n’roll. .

THE BIG NEU THING
Whistlejacket - Melt

London’s Whistlejacket have been playing in and out of their city for the past few months, supporting The Orwells back in October for starters. ‘Melt’ might be the making of them, however. A fitting title for a song that helps make sense of and sparsen out their previously DIIV-channelling united boom, ‘Melt’ splices heady rock’n’roll with the kind of riffs Yuck would be proud to sport. The closing 60 seconds might be some of the finest Neu’s heard so far this year.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
nothing - Guilty of Everything
Guilty of Everything by nothing
As recommended by DIY scribe Tom Walters, there’s method to nothing’s shoegaze-encrusted madness. Thick blasts of guitar loosen up to the point of complete freedom in both ‘Dig’ and ‘Bent Nail’. This is the kind of music that’d happily sit down for a drink with hardcore/metal too. Brushings of shoegaze aren’t the bare bones; there’s bitter darkness lying beneath the fog. This Philadelphia band have something special and inevitably terrifying up their sleeves. Relapse Records release ‘Guilty of Everything’ on 4th March.
