THE GIG
Dark Bells, Whistlejacket, Great Ytene - London, The Lexington
It’s still early days for all three of tonight’s acts, releasing low-key singles in a busy 2014 and making exciting initial impressions. The psychwave bursts of Dark Bells are joined by fast-rising Whistlejacket and the fuzzed-out Great Ytene.
THE SONG
Reputante - Deep Set Eyes
Reputante’s debut EP is getting a release on Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records. Seems like Julian still has a thing for the punchy, angular approach that defines recent Strokes record and his own solo effort from two years back. Reputante steers spaced-out synths as part of a quick-witted, showy race to the finish. Ash’s Tim Wheeler is on the production desk.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Motherhood - The Blow
Birmingham’s Motherhood have flicked a switch. What used to be creeping and progressive has suddenly turned into a genre-meshing soul strut. ‘The Blow’ is a big fat song about cocaine - it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. But this following up to the ‘Murdering’ EP ups the sinister anti and aims high and mighty in the process.
