New music guide The Neu Bulletin (3rd July 2014)

DIY picks out Eugene Quell, Easy and Horsebeach as today’s new music tips.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

THE GIG:
Eugene Quell - London, The Old Blue Last

One EP in and another on the way and Eugene Quell’s fast becoming the scuzziest, grubbiest triumph to come out of the UK since chocolate spread with biscuit in it. A debut headline show takes place tonight, and it’s a free DIY Presents shebang, so there’s no doubt it’ll be a) busy, b) sweaty and c) spectacular.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Horsebeach - Faded Eyes

A project hailed by Manchester’s Ryan Kennedy, Horsebeach basks in the same uptight summer vibes that give Real Estate such an edge over contemporaries. Frustrated and fear’s packed into ‘Faded Eyes’ in equal measures to lazy-day relaxation and sleight of hand restraint. It’s a neat match, where outdoor escapism sounds like a potential source of terror. More recent song ‘Beneath Our Feet’ is just as much of a shadowed triumph - a debut album is due out 28th July. On 5th July, Horsebeach play Manchester’s Ruby Lounge.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Easy - Foxholes

Any band mixing in strings, minimal guitar parts and cheeky “woah” singalongs is due a Field Music comparison - from Sunderland to Los Angeles, Easy take on the Brewis brothers’ tight complexities and weave them into a strange web of their own. ‘Foxholes’ is both dramatic and carefree in its delivery - bold chants and head-turning melodies seem like such a regularity going by this track.
