New music guide The Neu Bulletin (7th May 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Spring King, Trudy and JATA.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Spring King
London, Victoria
Word’s spreading about Spring King. One of the best, most relentless live acts in the country, a spot on the recent Courtney Barnett tour has given them their biggest platform yet. Last weekend’s Live At Leeds was the firmest validation yet that they’re going upwards, barmy singalongs to ‘The City’ being a standout moment from the set. Skip election fever for just a couple of hours and see them tonight.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Trudy - All My Love
We get it, Tarek Musa - you’re busy. Not only is he fronting Spring King (above), he’s also at the production desk for some fellow fresh faces. Dutch band St. Tropez sprung up on the scene earlier this year thanks to Musa, and Leeds outfit TRUDY are a similarly exciting prospect. Their smoke-doused take on punk performs a brilliant balancing act between lulling tones and vicious, snarling chants. They sound like a bunch of drunks who’d rather give you a hug than start a brawl.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
JATA - The Curse
Berlin newcomer JATA prefers to keep things disjointed. Every element of his sparkly ‘The Curse’ debut is slightly out of place. Taking on a trespasser mentality, synths bend where they shouldn’t, structures shift where they ought not to. But this is a celebration of the oddball and deranged - a curious introduction.
