Cosmo Sheldrake, Melodic - London, The Old Queens Head


Brighton-based beatsmith slash poet slash experimentalist Cosmo Sheldrake isn’t short of attributes. When he pads out strange, squealing samples into his songs he’s also able to add an eerie, folk-led backdrop. It’s an unusual quality, one that brings him to this show at The Old Queens Head, with Melodic in support.

Spirit Kid - Slow It Down


Simple, get-your-kicks rock ’n roll with not a split-second spared, ‘Slow It Down’ isn’t the stuff of wonder: It’s just a breakneck speed, shameless thrillseeker without any faults. Entering at a ridiculous BPM, it still manages to rise and rise and rise. Head in the clouds, its Strokes-style garage punk is verging on corny, it’s so catchy. But shake out any cynicism and you’ll be exposed to the most immediate song of 2014 so far. Spirit Kid is on another level - credit to Boston resident Emeen Zarookian.

Boo, Forever - Bones
Bones by Boo, Forever

The vocals in Boo, Forever’s latest track have latched onto a certain someone, that much is quickly picked up on. Bon Iver. That’s all you need to know. Falsetto-ed, layered, like the snowy in the cabin in the woods is more than just an afterthought. As it progresses, however, with shifting production and skittering rhythms, there’s enough in ‘Bones’ to prove it’s worth more than cheap comparisons.
