Sub Pop-signed, LA-based trio have created an essential new LP. Listen now on DIY.
When it comes to LA hip-hop trio clipping., their second record was never going to be a casual run through conventional influences. If anything, ‘CLPPNG’, their first work on Sub Pop, exists to open up boundaries, kick ordinary in the teeth. Daveed Diggs leads, with Willian Hutson and Jonathan Snipes providing cutting production that pendulum swings between deft minimalism and heart-stealing punches.
“It’s our second record but the first that we didn’t just release ourselves for free on the internet,” say the trio. “We produced all the tracks in our home studio, making all the sounds from scratch (no presets) either by building sounds using synthesizers and software, or by cutting up field recordings we made.”
“The lyrics were written using a strict set of grammatical rules, but you’ll have to figure out what those were on your own,” they continue. “The album features guest appearances by four of our favorite rappers ever, three of whom we’ve been listening to for hella years (Gangsta Boo from the Three 6 Mafia, Guce from Bullys Wit Fullys, and King T from the Likwit Crew) and one younger rapper who we think is just about ready to blow up (Cocc Pistol Cree).
“We get to release it on an incredible, legendary record label — we grew up listening to Nirvana, Mudhoney, Earth, Codeine, Sleater-Kinney etc. so it’s a huge honor to be on Sub Pop.”
With NPR streaming the record in the States, DIY’s delighted to bring you a UK exclusive Soundcloud stream of the LP. Listen in full a week ahead of the record’s release on 9th June.
