alt-J’s Joe Newman announces debut solo album as JJerome87, ‘The Canyon’
He’s officially launched the venture with a blissed-out new single, ‘Track and Field’.

JJerome87 - the solo project of alt-J frontman Joe Newman - has confirmed that he’ll be sharing his debut album under the name, ‘The Canyon’, on 26th June via Mushroom Music / Virgin Music Group.
The news follows the arrival of JJerome87’s inaugural single ‘Brush Me Like A Horse’ back in January, and will total 11 tracks inspired by the landscapes and sounds of dusty, sun-soaked America. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Carlos de la Garza, the LP saw Newman embrace the beloved Motown influences of his youth - as well as the much newer experiences that come with parenthood - to craft what he has called “a leap of faith”.
Explaining more about its latest cut ‘Track And Field’, Newman has noted: “I see this song as an early ‘90s American montage that focuses on two college kids falling for each other on a college athletics track. [It’s] a song to sing along to in a car going somewhere nice… a beach, or through a tunnel in a helicopter, Mission Impossible style. Enjoy.”
