Oh, Canada
Arcade Fire, Mac DeMarco nominated for Polaris Music Prize 2014
A newly announced longlist features Solids, Pup, Owen Pallett and loads more.

Canada’s most prestigious music award the Polaris Music Prize has announced its longlist for the Canadian Album of the Year. Eventually this’ll be whittled down to a shortlist and a winner, with last year’s victor Godspeed! You Black Emperor reacting in slightly controversial circumstances by damning the whole concept of prizes and competitions for musicians. They called the ceremony “tone deaf” after being handed the prize.
Albums released between 1st June 2013 and 31st May 2014 are eligible for the prize, and this year’s list includes big guns like Arcade Fire’s ‘Reflektor’ (pictured), as well as lesser known gems like PUP’s self-titled debut and Cousins’ ‘The Halls of Wickwire’.
Other highlights include Tim Hecker’s ‘Virgins’ and Solids’ ‘Blame Confusion’, with Owen Pallett and Mac DeMarco likely to make the eventual shortlist, which is announced on 15th July.
The winner is announced at a 22nd September Gala.
