Bastille play new material during Glastonbury secret set
Bastille appear on the William’s Green stage for one of the festival’s first secret sets.
It’s like nothing’s changed. Same set-up, same bellowed-out anthems, even the same bloody clothes. Dan Smith and Bastille are back with new material, but within seconds of arriving on William’s Green for a last-minute set, everything’s back to normal. This show’s been on the cards for a while. A couple of weeks back, three songs from a potential second LP were showcased - now it’s time to unveil newbies on the biggest platform possible.
William’s Green has fast become a staple for secret sets, but only a small handful in attendance are clueless about who’s about to come on stage minutes before it start. When Smith and co. arrive, there’s a tiny exodus. The rest heave forward, welcoming in a band who could easily conquer the Pyramid Stage this afternoon if they fancied it.
When it comes to the new material, it’s up there with the all-out force of ‘Pompeii’, albeit in a sharper, more synth-led direction. They’re still not showing their full hand, but what’s displayed is a mighty indicator of things to come.
