Big Spring change the seasons with sludgy single ‘5th of July’
Fuzz-drenched single lands ahead of a show with Demob Happy.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Big Sludge.
There’s sludgy, disease-infested noise, and then there’s Big Spring’s ‘5th of July’. It’d take an army to wade through their heavygoing wall of sound, but it also mirrors as the group’s most all-encompassing, life-affirming moment to date.
That’s the thing - for all of the four-piece’s grizzly, saw-toothed charge, they manage to sugarcoat these sounds in sweet, sky-reaching melodies. The end result is a cross between early Wolf Alice and Big Deal’s final album, a neat balancing act between the rowdy and the rousing. It’s no wonder Daniel P Carter’s dubbed them the “best new band in Britain”.
‘5th of July’ lands ahead of December UK dates, starting tonight in London.
