Björk’s record label talk about how they dealt with ‘Vulnicura’’s leak

One Little Indian discuss the complexities of a label’s worst nightmare.

The founder of Björk’s label One Little Indian has been speaking to the press on how they dealt with the leak of her eighth album ‘ Vulnicura’.

Derek Birkett has told Billboard that the news was reported to them by her fans, who contacted Björk through her official website. Birkett goes into great detail about the panic, consequences and handling of the leak, discussing the problems with licensees and retailers they were working with for ‘Vulnicura’s campaign

He tells the publication: “Björk ideally wanted to get the whole record out, and to cut a very long story short, she made a mostly artistic decision that she wanted to get it all out.” Originally One Little Indian were advised to pre-sale ‘Vulnicura’ with two-three tracks, before Björk made the decision herself. Their decision displeased Amazon and Rough Trade Germany, who both warned One Little Indian that their rushed digital release would effect physical sales. Rough Trade reportedly refused to support Björk in the future and Amazon threatened to support the digital release after the “exclusive” was given to competitors iTunes.

Despite the issues, ‘Vulnicura’ has entered the Top 20 in the Official Charts since the iTunes release on Tuesday. Read more of Derek Birkett’s interview here.
