Go, Boston!
Boston mayor proclaims 9th April ‘Riot Grrrl Day’
It’s in honour of Kathleen Hanna, who’s giving a lecture and performance today in the city.
For residents of Boston, MA over in the States, 9th April is now ‘Riot Grrrl Day’.
The city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, is making a proclamation in honour of Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna, who visits the city today for a lecture.
She’ll be presented with the proclamation by long-time friend, and the mayor’s chief of policy Joyce Linehan.
“[Kathleen’s agent] called me to see if I would introduce Kathleen, probably based on the fact that Kathleen, back in the day, used to stay at my house when bands came through town,” Linehan told Boston magazine. “We knew each other from the indie rock world.”
That connection ended up evolving into the creation of Riot Grrrl Day “just because we can do that sort of thing here.”
The proclamation also, as the magazine reports, features adaptations of Hanna’s Riot Grrrl Manifesto, in part reading “The riot grrrl philosophy has never felt more relevant, with misogyny still rampant in many cultural spaces,” and “Riot grrrls redefine the language used against them and continue to fight the newest incarnations of patriarchy. In doing so, they ironically confirm one ex-congressman’s accidental wisdom: ‘the female body has ways to try to shut that down.’ It sure does: women’s voices telling their stories can shut that down.”
Hanna’s band, The Julie Ruin, travel to the UK in May.
