CHVRCHES head into the studio having “done a lot of writing on the road”
The trio have started work on the follow-up to their 2013 debut ‘The Bones of What You Believe’.
This weekend, Scottish trio CHVRCHES returned to the studio to begin work on their second album. Needless to say, they’re well-prepared for the follow-up to their 2013 debut ‘The Bones of What You Believe’, and they recently spoke to DIY about overcoming the idea of beginning work during their touring schedule.
“We’ve now done a lot of writing on the road,” admits the band’s Martin Doherty, in the forthcoming February issue of DIY. Having spent the majority of the past two years touring, it was a necessary step closer to being ready to start work on their sophomore effort.
“I think, initially, we were reluctant to do it,” he added, “we sort of wanted to protect the dynamic of ‘three people in a room at once’ idea, because that’s the way that the first album came about. When you’ve been on tour as much as we have been in the past two years, you don’t really have a choice. You either create on the road or you don’t do anything and the idea of coming back after three years of doing absolutely nothing - and not even working those muscles creatively - is insane.”
They’ve not quite been able to construct fully-formed songs whilst touring, granted, but they have plenty of ideas and elements with which they can now play. “I’ll write a verse and a chorus, and one production hook but not take it any further because when we get into the studio, we can flesh it out. Now, there’s between twenty five and thirty ideas. Verse, chorus song structures or melodic ideas kicking around which will be really useful in the studio, but they’re not the be all and end all of the recording process.”
