Dave Grohl talks Foo Fighters’ ‘cinematic’ new album

The record will be their longest to date, and he’s already working on the follow up.

Dave Grohl talks Foo Fighters' 'cinematic' new album

Dave Grohl has been speaking about Foo Fighters’ forthcoming eighth studio album, and is already planning their ninth.

The frontman has already revealed details of a TV series for HBO later this year, documenting the eight studios around the country where the eight songs were recorded. Despite the shorter track list, though, Grohl claims it’s the band’s longest record to date.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he details the “cinematic approach” taken to the album. “I couldn’t just write a three-and-a-half-minute long KROQ jingle and film it for the finale of an episode about the history of music in New Orleans,” Grohl explains, “We really had to step up what we do. The music is a progression or an evolution for sure, but it’s a Foo Fighters record.”

“You’ll recognize Foo Fighters in this record but you’ll also be surprised by us. We’re doing things that we’ve never done before.” He continues, “Honestly, there are sections of songs that will really take you by surprise.” Fans shouldn’t fear, though - he also details “choruses that you’ll just recognize as Foo Fighters within the first three seconds.”

And as for the record after this? Well, Grohl’s already come up with a killer idea. He’s just not telling us yet. “I already know what we’re doing for the next Foo Fighters record and that’s even f—in’ crazier,” he reveals. “I came up with this idea a month and a half ago. The guys were, like, ‘Dude, we have to finish this first.’ I know, fuck!”
