Editors: “I’ve got my kids here today and we’re having a whale of a time!”
“I’m always excited to come to a festival like Latitude and try to show people that we’re still around!”
Ahead of their huge performance on the opening night of this weekend’s Latitude festival, Editors’ Ed Lay and Justin Lockey gave DIY a taste of why they love the festivities and what it’s like to return after a five-year absence.
“I’m always excited to come to a festival like Latitude,” offers up the band’s drummer Lay, “and try to show people that we’re still around and we’re still doing our thing!” he laughs. “We haven’t played many festivals in the UK for a number of years, and we last played Latitude in 2009, so to come back after five years is a bit of a pleasure really. It’s a brilliant festival. There’s a lot of family - I’ve got my kids here today and we’re having a whale of a time. It’s a different slant on what we usually do, so it’s great.”
Currently in the midst of a handful of festivals around Europe, the band are now also almost ready to close the chapter on their 2013 album ‘The Weight Of You Love’. Already looking forward to the future, Lay reveals work has already begun on its follow-up. “Second summers [of album campaigns] are always a bit strange; it’s nice working because you go out on the weekends, see the band, and then go home on the weeks and see your family. All the things that regular people do!
“Now, Tom [Smith, vocals] has sent through a whole bunch of songs for us to think about, when it comes to going into the studio. Our heads are switching to the next album now.”
“At the moment,” confirms guitarist Lockey, “[the next album]’s just parts at the moment. Parts and skeletons of songs.”
“It’s gonna be bit of both,” adds in Lay, confirming they’ll be attempting to both build upon their last record, whilst still exploring new avenues. “We’ve always tried to do different records as we’ve gone on. JUstin has only done the one with us. There are parts of that record where we go, ‘Yeah, we’ve maximised what we could’ve done with it’, and there’ll be parts - as there always should be parts - where we go, ‘I’d want to do something different, after whatI’ve learned on that record.’”
Editors play the Obelisk Arena at Latitude, 20.00.
