Everything Everything touch on “One Direction territory” for ‘Get To Heaven’
From unlikely influences to new beginnings, the band give us the scoop on ‘Get To Heaven’ in the new issue of DIY, landing this Friday.

In the new issue of DIY, out this Friday (22nd May) Everything Everything don matching quidditch robes and give us the scoop on forthcoming album ‘Get To Heaven’.
The band’s third album, they explain, is a big departure from their last record ‘Arc’. “For the second record, I was probably too acute and I felt like I sounded a bit vague; too all-encompassing,” admits frontman Jonathan Higgs. “I knew I wanted [‘Get To Heaven’] to sound like I was angry. I wanted to say lots of things without being preachy or alienating. I think all of the things that I learned from the second record - about addressing the listener, asking questions rather than trying to answer them - all of that stuff brings people in more. It feels a lot more honest that way.”
‘Get To Heaven,’ the band tell us, takes all of that on board, and sails one way into a sea of massive weird-pop anthems like ‘Distant Past’ and ‘Regret’. Everything Everything were also inspired by unlikely icons going into their fearless new direction. Namely, One Direction.
“I wanted to go really far into One Direction territory,” Jonathan Higgs laughs. “So I could join One Direction.” He’s not, he clarifies, trying to replace Zayn Malik. “I hoped these guys would accept it and make it into a band thing, because I knew what I had made wasn’t but I really liked it.” he says. “It was unashamedly, a club banger,” offers guitarist Alex Robertshaw, referring to the first album single ‘Distant Past’.
