Father John Misty mocks streaming culture by putting ‘I Love You, Honeybear’ online in MIDI form

“Rest assured, no surprises should you make the decision to buy the album!” says a sarcastic description on new service SAP.

Father John Misty mocks streaming culture by putting ‘I Love You, Honeybear’ online in MIDI form

Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty is poking fun at streaming culture by setting up his own “service”, the appropriately-named SAP.

Launched on a fancy, “bespoke”-looking website, the service begins by stating: “music is expensive to buy, and, well, we don’t always end up liking what we hear” before pointing out how “sophisticated discovery algorithms even guarantee that we never accidentally discover anything we might not like.”

Asking the question: “Is there a way to prevent anyone from spending money ever?”, SAP then delivers a “free” stream of ‘I Love You, Honeybear’, Father John Misty’s new album.

The only catch? It’s streaming in MIDI form, making this one big elaborate joke.

“SAP files sound incredible when compressed and streamed at low resolutions over any laptop speaker or cell phone,” says Tillman. “They are cheap to produce and take up even less space than the average MP3.” Take that, 2015.

See the whole ruse here and pre-order ‘I Love You, Honeybear’.
