Florence + The Machine have made a short film, 'The Odyssey'

Just making an album of lovely songs isn’t enough any more - in this post-‘Lemonade’ life, every record’s gotta have an accompanying movie, a fast-food tie-in, and a five-step plan for Oscars success. Sort of.

In reality, it’s more likely that a handful of artists with the means to do so are likely to get behind the camera to offer a little more depth to their “artistic” “process”. Also in reality, it’s unlikely Florence + The Machine swiftly knocked up this new effort, ‘The Odyssey’, in under 24 hours to ride Bey’s coat-tails. It’s far too high-budget for that.

Linking together the blockbuster videos for the singles to last year’s ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ LP, Florence had the following to say on ‘The Odyssey’: “This is the finale of a very personal project that came from a conversation me and Vince [Haycock, director] had in the Chateau Marmont about a year and a half ago while I was writing ‘How Big How Blue How Beautiful’. I was talking to him about the record and the car crash of a relationship break up I was going through. The highs and the lows of love and performance, how out of control I felt, the purgatory of heartbreak, and how I was trying to change and trying to be free. And we decided we would re-tell this story in full.”

Sounds a bit intense, really. Grab yourself a big tub of Ben & Jerrys and watch ‘The Odyssey’ here.
