Free Money start strong on debut track ‘Headful’

The band, whose first step is today’s Neu Pick, also play their debut show at London’s Shacklewell Arms on 20th May.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Free Money.

Free Money waste absolutely no time in surging to life. Their debut single ‘Headful’ is just that - a surge of impassioned, drawled vocals which expand into a chorus that should come from a band with half a decade of songs under their belt. It’s streaming first on DIY as today’s Neu Pick.

Both in sound and through the disturbing visuals, ‘Headful’ is anything but a timid introduction from Free Money - it’s the opening statement of a band already supremely confident in themselves.

The band are set to play their debut show at London’s Shacklewell Arms on 20th May. We had a quick chat with the band about their early days and the emergence of a ton of great London bands. Have a gander at that below ‘Headful’, which is streaming below.

Your band name surely exists to make gig posters more appealing. Or is there more of a backstory?

The name was chosen to sound like an internet scam that would probably end up in spam folders, giving other bands a fighting chance - Free Money’s nice like that.

‘Headful’ is one hell of an introduction. How many other songs do you have in your locker and where does this fit?

‘Headful’ is the first in a series of visuals for the songs, made in collaboration with filmmaker Janna Deeble and photographer Amanda Bødker. The next one is titled ‘What Did I Miss?’ and is coming soon. That’s all that can be revealed for now but rest assured, there’s plenty of Free Money to be had.

The track comes with a face-melting video. Are you keen to try new things visually, as well as musically?

Music and visuals should come as a package. Whether it’s music videos, the live shows or album artwork, if it sounds the part, it should look the part too. There’s such a wealth of emerging talent in London at the minute, it would be mad to turn a blind eye.

For more background info, which album changed your life and why?

Just as many young, harum-scarum millennials would agree, it has to be The Strokes - ‘Is This It’. The reasons why speak for themselves.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?

Bloodhound Gang & Bowling For Soup - a back to back special in Bournemouth. The bassist from Bloodhound Gang was pulling the guitarist from Bowling For Soup around the stage on a flight case that was duct taped to his cock. True story, check it out here. They really nailed the music and visual package. Oh, and dad got tinnitus.
