Interview
Get To Know… Kurtis Wells
His debut EP landed today!
Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.
Proceed with caution, I can become very addicting.
What’s your earliest musical memory?
I’d never forget the first time trying to figure out how people actually put music together. I recall I was around age 11 when I listened past what the average listener would hear on the radio, trying discover nuances I hadn’t heard before. This was the beginning of training my ear.
Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?
I remember the first time hearing Jill Scott as a kid, it was so different to me at the time because everything else around me was mostly Caribbean oriented. It was the first time I experienced music being use as a vessel to express emotion.
You’re from Trinidad and are now based in Berlin! What do you think of the music scenes there at the moment?
I think the music scene in Trinidad is very boutique and has been for quite some time. A lot of great artists never make it out because of lack of opportunity. I hope to help change this one day.
Are there any other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?
I rarely take inspiration from other artists. I’m mostly inspired by art and nature.
Who would be your dream collaborator?
Tyler, the Creator, hands down. Amazing artist. I think our music would last the times.
Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to this year?
I’m mostly excited about finally putting a body of work out for my fans. I’ve always dreamed of starting this journey & I think it’s the perfect prequel to my first album coming in 2022.
If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?
I hope people can remember and appreciate the true value of music, through the sincerity of my music.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
