Glass Animals cover Kanye West during Glastonbury set
Glass Animals battle bad weather for a mid-afternoon set on the Park Stage.
“Just imagine for a bit that it’s not raining and we’re on a deserted beach,” says Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley before playing ‘Gooey’. The Oxford band’s motif is stirring, tropical pop. The concept for debut album ‘Zaba’ stems from The Jungle Book. Their music belongs in the rainforest, not in some muggy English storm. But these guys have a habit of changing the climate on a whim.
Quietly and bit-by-bit, these four have been taking over. They’ve gradually become one of the UK’s biggest success stories, storming the States and leaving Australia in their wake. This country’s been a little slower to fall in love, but this is the firmest sign yet that heads are turning. ‘Toes’ and ‘Black Mambo’ are intricate sods, but they’re delivered even sharper when on record. And when frontman Bayley gets in his groove, he’s a magnetic frontman, jumping into the crowd and dancing like Thom Yorke in his twenties.
Once the storm dies down, there’s time for a quick nod to Saturday headliner Kanye West. A cover of ‘Love Lockdown’ sets the scene for the best of the weekend. Pity it’s not being played on a beach, but you can’t have it all.
