Grimes details “strong and aggressive” new album

Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Al Pacino in The Godfather II all inspired the record, apparently.

Grimes has detailed the inspirations behind her new album, which she previously said is due to come out with a day’s notice at some point during Autumn. During the writing of the record, she surrounded herself with ““bro-art,” apparently.

Speaking to Q Magazine, Grimes cited Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen’s albums as influences, along with gangster movies. ‘‘One song on the album, Kill V Maim, is written from the perspective of Al Pacino in The Godfather Pt 2,’‘ she said. ‘‘Except he’s a vampire who can switch gender and travel through space.’‘ Because, obviously.

Grimes also said that she feels like a stronger person on her new record. ‘‘I was a much weaker person when I wrote Visions,’‘ she said. ‘‘It was a sad record- cathartic, but victim-y. During this album I’ve got control of my music. It feels more devoloped. On ‘Visions’ I was still in school, mentally. Since then, I’ve wanted to make something strong and aggressive because it’s more reflective of me.”

Grimes also told Q that she relocated from L.A. to a titchy town in British Columbia called Squamish. “I wanted to get away from Hollywood bullshit,” she said, before detailing her approach to writing the new record. “There was a lot of ‘crazy’ going on, but it was organised ‘crazy’ - like lying in the dark and seeing if I could hallucinate,” she explained. “It felt good, letting myself be a total fucking weirdo. And I had cookies.”
