Not LED-gendary

Hang on - are the Tories ripping off The 1975?

Matty Healy thinks the government needs to be sued for getting on the neon light bandwagon.

Hang on - are the Tories ripping off The 1975?

The 1975’s Matty Healy has called Prime Minister David Cameron a “toff prat.”

This is because from Matty’s perspective, it looks like the government are ripping off the band’s neon-lit imagery, mirroring ‘I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it’’s visual concept for next month’s EU referendum.

“How do you sue the Government??” the frontman said, on Twitter and as reported by Noisey. “Oi @David_Cameron come up with your own visual identity you toff prat. You should know better even if you are a MASSIVE Tory,” he added. “You can’t imbue my identity as an artist with something as divisive as The @eureferendum it’s totally totally taking the piss@AcademyFilms.”

A promotional video from the Electoral Commission - technically this wasn’t the government’s doing, it’s this separate body - places a flickering, pink neon light in forests, football pitches, alleyways (really British locations, basically).

And as you might remember, The 1975 did the same ahead of this year’s second album. Lyrics, song titles and the band’s own name were set in similar settings, from grubby bedrooms to empty deserts. And the imagery’s been followed through from pop-up shops to giant arena stages - it’s still intrinsically linked with everything the band does.

While it might be a bit rich to claim credit for every LED light display in history, the similarities are glaring. Next thing we know, David ‘Call Me Dave’ Cameron’s going to be parading round parliament with his top off and a bottle of wine in one hand, declaring his disgusting welfare policies to be “ABOUT LIFE, DEATH AND ART - OK?”

Check out the video in question below. And don’t be so outraged by all of this that you forget to vote.

Update:

It gets uglier.

As pointed out by a Twitter user and confirmed by The 1975’s label Dirty Hit, the same person (Nadia Marquard Otze) who directed this EU referendum campaign was behind the camera for the band’s ‘Settle Down’ video. So there is a link.
