Hatchie crafts soaring dreampop on ‘Sure’

Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie is a fan of Hatchie – aka Brisbane-based Harriette Pilbeam – and it’s not hard to hear why. Harriette’s world revolves around shoegaze elements with a distinct, pop element, making her music easy to put alongside the likes of Alvvays and The Sundays. Instead of making comment on her daily life, she brings the listener inward, into her emotional life.

All of these elements combine like a hazy, wistful dream on her new single, ‘Sure’, a strident step out that’s filled with sunny, reverberating guitar chords, bursts of synths that flourish underneath the track, and Harriette’s own voice, which glides across the track like a daydream. It toes the line between the lightness of pop and some of the darker aspects of rock and shoegaze effortlessly.

Speaking of the track, Harriette said: “I wrote ‘Sure’ about people I know falling in and out of the same relationship issues as we grew out of our teens into early adulthood. When I initially wrote it, it was about a couple that decided to give it ‘one more shot’ over and over again because they couldn’t bear to be apart. When I think about all the lyrics now I realise that it could be interpreted in a number of different ways”.
