Krusoe shares debut single, ’S.O.S’

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Krusoe.

It’s too early to pass judgement on how exactly Oxford via Berlin newcomer Krusoe ticks, but his debut single gives some indication. It points to an electronically-minded songwriter with an innate talent for drawing gold out of a dense pot. He floods ’S.O.S’ with ideas; thick clouds of synths, heady beats, layer-upon-layer of instrumentation. Minimalism isn’t his game. And on this first step, he pulls it off.

On the surface it sounds effortless, but unpack ’S.O.S’’ elements and it’s like drawing pieces out of a jenga stack. Remove one part and it’s at risk of toppling. Xx-style guitars share space with earnest vocals. Midway through, soulful handclaps step in out of nowhere. And throughout, the track sounds like a spaceship ready to take off.

There’s plenty to stomach, then. Get to know Krusoe via today’s Neu Pick, streaming below. Debut EP ‘Give Up the Coast’ is due out later this year.
