Listen: M.I.A. Unveils ‘27’ For Amy Winehouse

Dedicated to all my friends that died at 27”, she wrote”

Following the news of Amy Winehouse’s death this weekend, M.I.A. has dedicated an unreleased track to the British singer.

The song, entitled ‘27’, has been dedicated to ‘all my friends that died at 27’, with M.I.A adding a special mention for Amy Winehouse via Twitter, ‘R.I.P A.M.Y.’

Amy Winehouse was found dead at her Camden home on 23rd July. Police are currently treating her death as ‘unexplained’.

The singer grew up surrounded by jazz, and shot to fame with ‘Back To Black’. Her gravelly voice and eclectic style won her comparisons to greats like Nina Simone, and the album was awarded 5 Grammys.

However, in recent years Winehouse became well known for her ongoing battle with substance abuse, which often overshadowed her songwriting talent.

News of the tragic death began to circulate on social networking sites, prompting heartfelt responses from fellow musicians. Lily Allen tweeted ‘It’s just beyond sad, there’s nothing else to say. She was such a lost soul, may she rest in peace.’. Jamie Cullum, the jazz pianist also paid tribute to the singer, saying ‘I shared some wonderful musical moments with Amy. I feel very lucky to have done so. She was a wonderful person with an extraordinary talent.’
