Neu Pick
Matadors get wonky on ‘Trumpet Of Conscience’
The elusive Manchester musician sure knows how to stomp
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Matadors.
First things first: is it a trumpet with a conscience, like a sentient brass instrument suddenly regretting the Mark Ronson-based sins of his kind? Or is it a sudden parp of conscientiousness? A big ‘ol whack of guilt suddenly brought to life in a grim grand reveal?
Frankly, we have no idea which way Matadors swing, but the elusive Manchester bedroom musician sounds bloomin’ wonderful either way.
All wonky lo-fi glam stomps, his latest offering takes the scrappy charm of first album Unknown Mortal Orchestra and underpins it with the kind of ear worm hook that you’ll be humming for weeks to come.
The track is the second in RIP Records’ new monthly ‘Introducing’ series - the first of which brought us this beaut from London oiks Hotel Lux.
Worth keeping an eye on, then.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
