METZ’ Alex Edkins confirms next Weird Nightmare album ‘Hoopla’
It’s his second LP under this new moniker, and his first since METZ called it a day in 2024.

Weird Nightmare - the new venture of METZ’ frontman Alex Edkins - has shared the news that a new album, ‘Hoopla’, will be arriving on 1st May via his former band’s label home of Sub Pop.
It’ll be Edkins’ second full-length record under the Weird Nightmare moniker (following 2022’s self-titled outing), and his first release since METZ announced in 2024 that the band were going on an “indefinite hiatus”.
Co-produced by Edkins himself and Spoon’s Jim Eno, ‘Hoopla’ promises to draw on power pop sensibilities and huge indie rock hooks to make for a fun, earworm-filled LP. A case in point? Its Julianna Riolino-featuring new track ‘Might See You There’, which, inspired by the simplicity and “big bar chords” of The Undertones and Protex, evokes a rose-tinted sense of teenage nostalgia.
Explaining more about the inspiration behind the single - which was born out of a visit back to his hometown - Edkins has recalled: “Small-town boredom and isolation almost feel like a gift in today’s highly connected world. I feel fortunate for that time spent idly, down in the basement, learning the entire Rancid ‘Let’s Go’ album on guitar with my friends. I find it easy to romanticise that time in my life, even though I was, without question, a disgruntled kid who badly wanted to escape my surroundings and see the world.”
