Mint Field mix sorrow and beauty on ‘Ojos En El Carro’

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Mint Field.

Tijuana-based Estrella Sanchez and Amor Amezcua are Mint Field, and they’re set to release their debut album ‘Pasar De Las Luces’ on 23rd February via the LA-based Innovative Leisure Records. The LP’s set to follow their 2015 EP ‘Primeras Salidas’, but with the new record the pair travelled to Detroit to record with Christopher Koltay. Speaking of the process, they say: “We had a much clearer idea of what we wanted and we had the tools to make it”.

That clarity has distilled into the thirteen tracks on the collection, which channel all of their inspirations and influences into moments that harbour sorrow and nostalgia through a blend of dreampop, krautrock and even stoner jams.

Some of those influences come to the fore on their new single, ‘Ojos En El Carro’. It’s swooning, atmospheric and almost elegiac with its fuzzy, reverberating aesthetic, and made even more so by Estrella’s hazy vocals. By its climax though, it morphs into a heavy, more crushing onslaught of scuzzed-out riffs, with Estrella’s voice gliding across the top. It’s dreamy, shoegaze-tinged and raw all at the same time.
