Nicolas Jaar soundtracks film inspired by Eric Garner and Michael Brown
‘Eleven Times’ is directed by Samantha Casolari.
Nicolas Jaar has contributed to the soundtrack for a short film inspired by the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, the two unarmed black men killed by police in America last year.
‘Eleven Times’ is directed by Samantha Casolari, who states that she was moved by the resulting civil protests and aimed to “empower the people who are subject to this unfortunately institutionalized system, showing their beauty and their strength.” The film’s title references the amount of times Eric Garner said “I can’t breathe” after a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold in July 2014.
The collaboration between Nicolas Jaar and Gil Scott-Heron collaborator Brian Jackson is inspired by ‘Winter In America’, the title track of an album released by Jackson and Scott-Heron back in 1974.
