Peace: “the next logical thing to do would be to headline”

Following their main stage debut and largest set to date, Harry and Sam Koisser reflect on Reading and Leeds.

Reading and Leeds festival, besides playing host to established bands well used to headlining, is infamous as somewhere that allows newer bands the chance to cut their teeth in a colossal environment. This year saw Royal Blood and Chvrches pack out the Radio One/NME tent effortlessly, and Gnarwolves also made their triumphant main stage debut. It was also the turn of Peace. Following their afternoon set at Reading, DIY caught up with the fairly shell-shocked Koisser brothers; frontman Harry and bassist Sam.

“Reading in a word?” drawls Harry, conducting an interview himself with self-directed questions. “Yes! Just so yes,” he laughs, “It was amazing. It went better than I expected. I was a bit scared.” “It’s our biggest show ever,” adds Sam “I saw Queens Of The Stone Age play it [on Friday night], and they kicked ass. Seeing the stage from the outside hits you with the reality. When you see the physical size of it, you think oh, heck, I’m going to have to get up there.”

“Do you know what I’ve remembered?” Harry exclaims, suddenly. “When we were choosing a band name we were like, imagine it as a backdrop on the Reading main stage. We visualised it, and now it’s like, fuck, we’ve done it. Back then, we hoped we’d get booked to play at The Rainbow [in Birmingham] one day. Reading was the limit of my pipe-dream, so what now? What am I going to do next? Shit,” he laughs. “The next logical thing to do would be to headline,” adds Sam.

75% of Peace might’ve been spotted in the crowd at Queens of the Stone Age (Harry admits he intended to go, but failed to navigate from the guest bar to the stage in ample time), but they’re not necessarily taking notes. Harry, in fact, has a few suggestions of his own for Arctic Monkeys.

“If Alex Turner wants me to refine his moves he only needs to ask,” offers Harry, generously. ” I’ve got a few suggestions. You know what, he needs to start doing one of my moves, a knee thrust - a latitudal knee-thrust. You just send your knee from east to west. Call me Uber cos my knee’s going west. Great move.”
