Leeds trio Peakes share the nighttime pop of ‘Hole In The Floor’

The band’s new EP ‘Absent In Person’ is out next month.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Peakes.

Leeds trio Peakes played their hometown leg of our Do It Yourself Neu Tour towards the end of last year, fresh from sharing promising new track ‘Still Life’.

The band are set to release new EP ‘Absent In Person’ next month via Practise Music, and today’s Neu Pick comes in the form of new single ‘Hole In The Floor’.

A propulsive, shiny pop song, the track exists at nighttime, adding firm, pulsating percussion to a woozy synth line. “I walk the streets with no gravity, everyone is out of reach,” vocalist Molly Puckering sings, but there’s grounding in the track’s huge chorus, which bursts out of nowhere and has more than a few hints of Lorde’s deliciously dark debut album ‘Pure Heroine’.

“It’s an observation of a person who is drifting through their surroundings,” the band say of ‘Hole In The Floor.

“They are detached from the outside world and float above the people that care about them and can help them. But it’s that acceptance of knowing that the further you let yourself drift the harder you will fall in the end.”
